THE GOAL

Designing connection through video chats & messages

Many deaf and hard of hearing individuals use visual cues like body language and facial expressions to supplement their understanding during a conversation. This is lost during faceless phone calls, even if the calls are captioned. InnoCaption Video aims to bridge that gap by providing captioned video calls.

I was tasked with retaining skeptical users and enhancing the overall communication experience in InnoCaption Video.

LOOKING FORWARD

Proving value to a community

I designed onboarding with the goal of demonstrating our app’s value to hard-of-hearing AND hearing users as soon as possible. Video calling apps -- even captioned ones -- are not uncommon, so I distilled what sets our solution apart before removing all obstacles that were in the way of proving that to users from the first screen.

For InnoCaption Video, this meant placing an interactive demo early in onboarding, but it can take many other forms in other apps.
